SARASOTA (WSNN) – If you suffer from migraines, especially during the holidays, there’s a new treatment on the market that could help.
A migraine is a complex neurological brain disease that affects nearly 40 million people in the U.S.
“It can often be throbbing and associated with symptoms like nausea, light and sound sensitivity among others,” Neurologist and Headache Specialist Dr. Peter Goadsby said.
Texas resident Kelsi Owens has suffered from migraines since she was six years old.
“I’m a mom, I have a 5-year-old daughter, and explaining to her that I can’t take her to a birthday party or the park or play at home is really difficult,” Owens said.
But for Owens, it’s especially worse during the holidays.
“There’s more stress, the weather is getting cooler,” Owens said. “I’m personally getting a lot less sleep and all of those things are triggers for me.”
While it’s worse for Owens this time of year, for others, it gets better.
“Holidays are very stressful, but I don’t get any migraines,” Sarasota resident Amanda Cooper said.
“I get a lot of migraines, but I find this time of the year is more positive, so it helps me with the migraines,” Sarasota resident Majo Chavez said.
Dr. Goadsby says potential triggers for migraine during the holidays include stress, sleep pattern changes, and weather changes. If you’re suffering, QULIPTA is a new prescription medicine that can help. It’s aimed to prevent treatment episodic migraine in adults.
“It provides real hope to patients whose lives have been blinded by migraines and offers a simple once-daily treatment that patients can easily fit into their lives,” Goadsby said.
Dr. Goadsby says this is a first-of-its-kind treatment that blocks CGRP or calcitonin gene-related peptides through a once-daily dose. It’s available in three strengths – 10 mg, 30 mg and 60 mg.
