PUNTA GORDA – Swimmers and Paddlers hit the water for the annual freedom swim in Punta Gorda.

Punta Gorda kicked off their Fourth of July morning with a swim in the Peace River.

“We wanted to come out and see them swim the 1.5 miles, so that’s what they’re doing out here right now,” said Punta Gorda residents, Bobbi and Kevin Rodgers.

The swim has been tradition in Punta Gorda for over 30 years, but for some spectators it was a first

“Last year because of COVID, they didn’t do it last year so this is the first time since we’ve been here that they’ve done it,” said Rodgers.

Participants are allowed to swim, ride on a raft, or use a favored flotation device to cross the river.

“I think the youngest out there was three or four with their parents to senior citizens,” said Rodgers.

Punta Gorda resident Kevin Rogers, says it’s great to be back

“It’s just in these times it gives me chills to see people come together and want to do this kind of event  for a cause, and flying the American flag, you know, we love where we live, and that’s all were asking , to celebrate where we live,” said Rodgers.

Deputies and FWC were also nearby assuring smooth sailing for all

“Making sure everybody is safe, boats out in the water, and we want to let them know that we support you and thank you for what you do for us, thank you to our officers,” said Rodgers.

For one family, the swim was the perfect excuse to get out on the water.

“I’ve never done it, but I’ve always wanted to try it so here we are,” said one Punta Gorda resident. “I think it takes a couple hours, we’ll see.”
