SARASOTA – “The president of the United States is the most powerful man in the world and had been for all of our lifetimes so how can you not be interested in the presidency there’s so many things that are affected by it,” said Suncoast Author, Mark Weston.

New York native, Mark Weston is a former lawyer and journalist turned author who has written six books, many of which have focused on American democracy and the head of state and government.

“I began to learn that the great presidents are the exception and the mediocre presidents are the rule and that’s why I’m just finishing a book called who are our worst presidents and how to have fewer of them and some of the ones that came just before Lincoln and brought us the civil war were particularly bad,” said Weston.

Weston says he spent two years, spread over half a decade writing the runner-up presidency, The Elections That Defied America’s Popular Will and How Our Democracy Remains in Danger

“People ask me, how do you write a book and I say, one chapter at a time and in this book, each of the chapters is about a different election where the person with fewer votes, won, which has happened five times in our history now 1824, 1876, 1888, 2000 and 2016,” said Weston.

Weston believes a woman will soon be elected president of the United States, but until then,  he has a couple favorite men who have taken the oath of office.

“Top five, in order are probably Lincoln, Washington, Franklin Roosevelt, in my opinion, Harry Truman number four and Teddy Roosevelt number five,” said Weston.

Weston says he would prefer the annual holiday celebrating the U.S. commanders in chief have a different name, preferably one honoring two of his favorites.

“Presidents Day is an excuse for car sales, mattress sales, and why should republicans have a holiday that Joe Biden is part of, and why should democrats have a holiday that Donald Trump, half of our presidents are not worth having a holiday over, it was a major mistake and we could change it very simply by just calling it, Lincoln-Washington Day.”
