SARASOTA, CHARLOTTE COUNTIES (SNN TV) – State Senator Joe Gruters is running for treasurer of the Republican National Committee.

Instead of running for reelection as Florida’s Republican Chairman, he’s running on the national level, citing Republican successes in Florida compared to the nation. Nationally, Republicans struggled, losing a Seat in the U.S. Senate, winning just nine seats in the U.S. House — though enough to gain slim control of the chamber — and losing several governor’s seats and state legislatures to Democrats.

The Herald-Tribune reports he’s considered an underdog against an RNC member from Kentucky but he hopes the GOP’s strong performance in Florida helps his campaign. RNC leadership elections are next month.
