SARASOTA – If you were out on the water today, you may have gotten blessed.
The Sarasota Yacht Club hosted their very own blessing of the fleet Sunday afternoon.
This is a maritime tradition that began centuries ago in Mediterranean fishing communities.
Faher Fausto from St. Martha’s and Pastor Ken Blyth from St. Armand Key Lutheran Church blessed a total of 35 boats of the Sarasota Yacht Club.
“This is a wonderful all club event, this is an opportunity for all of us to get together and recognize how grateful we are for all the blessings that we have and to be members of this wonderful club, the friendship, the fellowship that we have, this a neat opportunities for families whether you own oa boat or don’t own a boat this a club wide event and we pride ourselves on that,” said Commodore of the Sarasota Yacht Club, Brian Will.
The tradition is now practiced by all religions as a blessing from local clergy, meant to ensure a safe and bountiful season.
