SARASOTA – It’s the end of an era at the Sarasota Kennel Club as they close the chapter on greyhound racing.
After 75 years the Sarasota Kennel Club will be ending live greyhound racing in their iconic facility. Hundreds showed up for some of the final races on Friday enjoying the 50 cent hotdogs, beer and soda.
Director of Racing Tom Bowersox says it’ll be sad day for both employees and patrons come Saturday for the last day of racing.
“Well I think people will always enjoy coming here. Fridays are kind of a special day, we have specials on hotdogs and drinks. We seem to draw more of a crowd on Fridays than normal. The people just they enjoy the entertainment of the Sarasota Kennel Club,” said Bowersox.
The final races will start at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday with a total of 16 races for the day. The kennel club will still hold horse races and will be upgrading to a new one eyed jacks poker room. The greyhounds will end their season at the Ebro Greyhound Park in Ebro, Fl.
