SARASOTA (WSNN) – There’s a new life-size bronze metal plaque that will live outside Sarasota’s Southside Elementary school and it’s all aimed at honoring Mrs. Smith.

Who’s Mrs. Smith you might ask? Mrs. Dorothye Smith was the county’s first post segregation African American principal. Sarasota County school officials along with Newtown alive honored the trailblazer Sunday afternoon.

Smith was known for being a strong and compassionate educator who had an immense heart for uplifting her students, staff, and colleagues.
