SARASOTA – Despite the rain Sarasota County Fire Department held its 6th annual Fire Fest.
The event is designed to educate the public on the need of controlled fires and the dangers of wildfires on the Suncoast.
Fire Fest was hosted at the Carlton Junior Memorial Reserve in Venice. Sarasota Fire Debarment Mitigation Officer Jay Bailey says the event combines education and fun for the whole family.
“We’re here to educate the public on prescribe fire and why we do it the ins and outs of that, techniques we use, the types of equipment’s we use and why we burn them and why it’s important for the habitat and control the hazards of wildfires,” said Bailey.
Bailey says the importance of controlled fires reduce hazardous fuel loads near developed areas, manage landscapes, and restore natural woodlands.
