MANATEE COUNTY – Port Manatee is seeking to fill more than 100 jobs.

Port Manatee set a record in shipping volume in the 2021 fiscal year.

“We’re keeping up with the vessels, were not seeing any congestion in the terminal but cargo volumes are definitely up across all of our sectors and that is providing direct support to the supply chain,” said Chief Commercial Officer at Port Manatee, Charles Tillotson.

A wide variety of cargos move through Port Manatee, including containers with produce from Mexico and other countries in South America.

“Fuel from Texas and Louisiana that actually service 11 counties south of us here,” said Tillotson.

With more vessels coming through, Port Manatee and its more than a dozen tenants are looking for new employees to fill the critical supply chain jobs

“Crane operators, fork lift operators, welders, mechanics, truck drivers, these are all jobs that have a direct impact on supporting supply chains,” said Tillotson.

As the work force sees a younger generation applying for these jobs, a lot of training is involved

“When those folks join they’re not brining that skillset so we have to spend time with them and mentor and coach, make sure they’re doing it right, and make sure they’re doing it safe,” said VP of Operations at Logistec Gulf Coast, Randy Comeaux.

“Hopefully we have seen the worst of the labor shortage, over the last two three weeks we have seen an uptick and interest in this industry so hopefully it continues on that base and we can continue to bring folks into this workforce,” said Comeaux.
