SARASOTA – A pipeline located at the Sarasota Utilities campus ruptured early Thursday morning sending raw sewage gushing into Sarasota Bay.

Crews were able to fix the issue within in an hour but not before an estimated 900,000 gallons of wastewater were discharged on site. Heavy rainfall helped dilute the sewage before contaminating the bay waters.

“We take this real seriously and we’re doing everything we can to make the repairs,” utilities director Bill Riebe said. “This has no impact on water quality for drinking water and so on.”

Riebe advises avoiding the outfall location and anticipates repairs to be complete in about two weeks.
