PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (SNN) —  A pelican that was found tangled up in a fishing line was released on Wednesday at Laishley Park in Punta Gorda.

The pelican was found at a fishing pier and was later sent to Peace River Wildlife Center rehabilitation unit.

“He wasn’t able to fly. He was thin and dehydrated because he had been there for a while.  Somebody bought him. We cut the line out and put him on anti-biotic,” Robin Jenkins with the Vet for Peace River Wildlife Center said.

Jenkins said around 20% of birds that come into the center have injuries caused by fishing lines.

“If you get caught up in something, don’t just cut your line pull it as hard as you can and cut it as short as possible. If there is not a really long line hanging down nothing will be wrapped in it,” Jenkins said.
