VENICE (SNN TV) – A new development is coming to Venice over objections from residents.

The Herald-Tribune reports the Sarasota County Commission unanimously approved a change to the county’s long-term growth plan. That paves the way for development at 2651 Jacaranda Boulevard just south of U.S. 41.

The property is not far from the Venice Area Audubon Rookery. Residents who spoke worried the development could harm birds that use it. The president of the rookery said development will not only affect the birds’ survival but also the survival “of a significant tourist destination.” Residents also expressed concern about traffic.

One resident who spoke said massive development is transforming Venice “into just another over-crowded beach town.”

The new development will have 208 apartment units and 5,000 square feet of office and retail space.
