SARASOTA – You now have the opportunity to input on making roads safer in Sarasota and Manatee counties.
Busy intersections across the Suncoast have become some of the deadliest according to the 2019 safety assessment report
“Sarasota, Bradenton, North Port urbanized area was named the most dangerous for pedestrians in the nation, there are some methodology flaws in that report but it’s something we cannot ignore,” said Multi Modal Planner, Corinne Tucker.
That’s why the Sarasota/Manatee Metropolitan Organization, believes local drivers might want to share a thing or two about traffic at their ‘Destination Zero’ workshop.
“We are asking community members to get involved to help us identify strategies that we as the MPO undertake as well as our local jurisdiction to make sure that our streets are safer and not just safer but safe for those who are walking or driving,” said Tucker.
The in-person workshop will be held at the Bradenton Area Convention Center on September 27th.
“This is not something that can be fixed with just staff level involvement, we absolutely need community members, and anyone and everyone who can help us achieve our goal of zero fatalities and serious injuries by 2025,” said Tucker.
In the past six years more than 700 people have lost their lives and more than 8,500 have been seriously injured on the streets of Manatee and Sarasota counties.
“Safety is a top concern, it’s not something that can be easily solved in every situation but if we work together, we know we can get to zero,” said Executive Director of MPO, David Hutchinson.
