SARASOTA (SNN TV) – Mote Marine Laboratory releases 1,800 redfish in Suncoast waters.
On Thursday, they released the fish into Phillippi Creek on Sarasota Bay. It’s part of an ongoing effort to replenish the species in our waters.
The Herald-Tribune reports Mote‘s Aquaculture and Fisheries Ecology & Enhancement Program successfully raised 20,000 redfish on 200 acres off of Fruitville Road east of I-75.
That’s the largest number of fish produced in their program’s 25-year history. They’ve partnered with fishing club Salt Strong to release all 20,000 fish this month in Sarasota and Charlotte county waters.
The redfish are fitted with passive integrated transponder tags, which allow Mote scientists to monitor the fish to learn from their efforts. Redfish and snook are the main test species for restocking efforts statewide.
