TAMPA (SNN-TV) – The NFL today announced that Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Mike Edwards was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 2.

This marks the first time that Edwards has earned Defensive Player of the Week honors in his career. He becomes the fourth different Buccaneers safety to win the award and the first since Pro Football Hall of Famer John Lynch in 1996.

In a 48-25 win over the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2, Edwards returned a pair of fourth quarter interceptions for touchdowns to seal the win for Tampa Bay. Both of Edwards’ interceptions came in the fourth quarter, marking only the 10th time in NFL history that a player has registered multiple interceptions returned for a touchdown in a single quarter.

Edwards is the first player since 1992 with two interceptions returned for touchdowns in the fourth quarter of a single game. Edwards will look to replicate his performance on Sunday against the L-A Rams.
