SARASOTA – Parts of the Suncoast are dealing with an intense drought that has caused wildfires to spread throughout the area.
The Florida Forest Service – Myakka River District has assisted in battling six wildfires across the southwest. With two burning more than 120-acres combined in Charlotte County. Wildfire Mitigation Specialist Patrick Mahoney says the wildfire on Thursday in Rotunda was caused by an escaped unauthorized pile burn.
Wednesday fire in Punta Gorda is still under investigation. Mahoney says Charlotte County is under a Fire Restriction and the homeowners can expect a hefty fine.
“They tried to put it, but they were unsuccessful,” said Mahoney. “The humidity and the wind can play a different factor.”
Mahoney says the area is in desperate need of rain, and his team remains on high alert for the possibility of more fires popping up in the upcoming days.
“Of course any type of moisture will help, but they’re also looking at the possible [inaudible] and if that comes in with very little rain,” said Mahoney. “Then we’re going to have – our biggest concern is going to be lightning strike fires.”
Mahoney say without counting the two fires this week. Sarasota and Charlotte County have had nearly 40 fires this year.
