LAKEWOOD RANCH – The grandsons of sports broadcasting legend Dick Vitale have made it clear, they look to pave their own legacy as they head off to college and play tennis at the collegiate level.
Connor and Jake Krug made it official, the brothers signed to Duke University Saturday morning at the Lakewood Ranch Country Club. Surrounded by family and coaches the Krug brothers let it be known that they’d be breaking from family tradition by not attending Notre Dame university.
“Obviously Notre Dame is a great place and we looked at that very seriously. We just felt we’re going on our own path but we’re still a part of the Vitale family and we’re going to honor them in whatever we do,” said Connor.
Tennis coach legend Nick Bollettieri spoke at the signing wishing the two brothers good luck as they move forward in the next step of their tennis career. Reminding the young tennis players to never forget their roots here on the Suncoast.
“And we couldn’t be more appreciative to what the Vitale family has done. My grandpa, and grandma specifically, He’s been such incredible support system for us,” said Jake. “He’s been always supportive of our goals and dreams and us being able to chase them so we couldn’t thank him enough.”
The brothers started playing an array of sports at a young age but the two stuck to playing tennis the most. They’ll be heading off to Duke University this upcoming fall where they plan to make their family and grandfather proud.
