MANATEE COUNTY – Fresh produce was distributed at three Manatee County locations today.
Bananas, lettuce, carrots, and tomatoes all distributed, drive-thru style at Increasing Joy Ministries today.
“We are having families come through to pick up fresh produce, earlier we were at Visible Men Academy, Sozo Mission and many of the families that we’ve talked to today are just so grateful to receive this fresh produce,” said Vice President of Development at Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee County, Amy Towery.
Towery says pickup locations were carefully chosen.
“To really make an impact for families near title one schools, that is why we are out here today just to make sure the people who need fresh produce have access to it,” said Towery.
This will be the first of several distributions the third Thursday of every month until May, thanks to a grant from United Way Suncoast.
Manatee County Resident, Marsha Brown picked up fresh produce. She lives in a household of four.
“We need them badly, it helps out a lot,” said Brown.
Towery says the produce distributed will vary by month.
“We know especially right now in light of COVID-19 that so many families are trying to make every dollar stretch but we also know how important fruits and vegetables are to our diets so were trying to get this beautiful produce out to families who need it in our community,” said Towery.
