SARASOTA, Fla. (SNN TV) – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis appointed a local developer, Carlos Beruff, to the board of the state’s Citizens Insurance.
Beruff is the owner and CEO of Medallion Home Gulf Coast Incorporated and was a member of the State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota District Board of Trustees. Beruff sued Manatee County in 2015 to reduce wetland protections to allow for more development.
Citizens Property Insurance Corporation was created by the Florida legislature in 2002, which is Florida’s insurance of last resort for property owners who can’t find property or home insurance through a private insurer.
The Herald-Tribune reports the Florida Commission on Ethics ruled against Beruff in an ethics case that awaits the governor’s approval to be finalized. It involves a vote he took while serving on the water management district’s governing board that benefited a fellow developer.
