SARASOTA – Patients at Center for Sight are among the first in Southwest Florida with access to Topography-Guided LASIK Surgery.
“This laser offers certain enhancements that are really patient centric,” said Medical Director and LASIK, Cataract & Lens Replacement Surgeon for the Center for Sight, Dr. William J. Lahners, M.D., F.A.C.S.
The Center for Sight is now providing LASIK patients access to their newest laser system, helping reach more patients on the Suncoast
“In the past there have been candidates who are not good candidates for LASIK because perhaps of irregularly shaped corneas, or irregular topography, with this new technology the topography guided system, sometimes we can alleviate these irregular astigmatisms and irregular topography’s now, basically allowing some patients that couldn’t receive a great result with LASIK before, we can now give them the very best result possible,” said Dr. Lahners.
LASIK surgery, which uses light to change the shape of the cornea to eliminate the need for glasses, has been around for years for about 30 years in the United States. Dr. Lahners says the entire procedure takes about two minutes.
“It’s completely painless and it’s actually quite comfortable for the patient, the next day the patient sees really good, so it’s a very exciting procedure and generally it’s one of the most popular vision correction procedures we’ve ever done here at Center for Sight, and it’s considered the safest elective surgery ever done on human beings,” said Dr. Lahners.
After the procedure, patients can typically get right up and see, however the best vision comes the next day
“When they wake up the day after the procedure they can usually see very good it’s not un-common for them to be able to read all the way to the bottom of the eye chart so again, that factor is definitely present with all laser LASIK than ever before and the quality of vision that we can achieve with this technology not only rivals contacts and glasses, but in some studies we’ve exceeded them,” said Dr. Lahners.
One patient who has worn glasses for more than 6 years, says the new system allowed him to be a perfect candidate
“I have a pretty severe astigmatism, and that’s why I went with the glasses at first, but they ran some more tests, they said although I have astigmatism, my corneas are super healthy and at this age I get the maximum amount of time to enjoy so I might as well, so I went with it,” said 22-year-old patient, Cory Gough.
