VENICE (SNN TV) – The Venice City Council will hear a case on the controversial shopping center.

Residents have organized against a proposed shopping center that would replace a wetland on Laurel Road and Jacaranda Boulevard. The Venice Planning Commission recommended against the change in a 4 to 3 vote.

In response to that, the Herald-Tribune reports the Venice City Council will hold a two-day hearing starting Wednesday, May 24. There will likely be another hearing in June.

The North Venice Neighborhood Alliance consists of residents in Aria and Milano, Venetian Golf & River Club, and Willow Chase. The group is opposed to the shopping center, which would be anchored by a Publix around 47,000 feet, as well as over 18,000 feet of other stores and a restaurant building over 5,000 square feet.
