SARASOTA, Fla. (SNN TV) — The Florida Supreme Court ruled Marsy’s Law doesn’t apply to police officers whose identities are concealed after using lethal force.
Marsy’s Law is a constitutional amendment approved by Florida voters in 2018, establishing several rights for crime victims, and is often cited as the reason why police choose not to release their names.
Thursday’s decision by the state’s high court overturns an appeals court ruling that sided with the Florida Police Benevolent Association.
Marsy’s Law protects crime victims from being identified publicly. But in this case, the Florida PBA tried to use it to stop the release of the names of two Tallahassee police officers involved in deadly shooting.
